Amazon FBA Barcodes: UPC, EAN and FNSKU Explained
Amazon FBA uses barcodes both to identify products and to track inventory inside the fulfilment network. A manufacturer barcode such as UPC or EAN and an Amazon barcode such as an FNSKU solve related but different jobs, and Amazon changed its commingling and barcode-eligibility rules effective March 31, 2026.

UPC and EAN are manufacturer barcodes that identify the product. An FNSKU is an Amazon inventory identifier tied to an FBA offer. Under Amazon’s March 31, 2026 policy change, brand owners with the Brand Representative role in Amazon Brand Registry can use eligible manufacturer barcodes without applying Amazon barcode stickers to prevent commingling, while resellers generally need Amazon barcode stickers; products without a manufacturer barcode also need Amazon barcodes. What changed on March 31, 2026?
Amazon announced that commingling practices would end for inventory shipped on or after March 31, 2026 and updated eligibility for using manufacturer barcodes.
The announcement says Brand Registry brand owners with the Brand Representative selling role no longer need Amazon barcode stickers to prevent commingling for products that already have eligible manufacturer barcodes. Resellers who are not enrolled as Brand Representatives are required to use Amazon barcode stickers, and products without manufacturer barcodes also require Amazon barcode stickers.

- Do not rely on an old FBA tutorial that predates March 31, 2026.
- Check the exact ASIN and FBA barcode preference in Seller Central before preparing units.
Do not invent an FNSKU yourself
The FNSKU is Amazon-side inventory identity. Use the FNSKU and label output assigned by Seller Central for the FBA listing rather than creating a random value that merely looks like an Amazon barcode.
If Amazon requires an Amazon barcode on the unit, follow Amazon’s current label formatting, placement and scannability requirements. BarcodeBatch can be useful for generic barcode work, but the Amazon-generated identity and compliance rules remain authoritative.
A safer FBA barcode workflow
- Confirm whether the product has a valid manufacturer barcode such as UPC or EAN.
- Confirm whether the seller is acting as an eligible Brand Registry Brand Representative or as a reseller.
- Check the product’s FBA barcode eligibility and barcode preference in Seller Central.
- If Amazon assigns/requires an Amazon barcode, use Amazon’s generated FNSKU label information.
- Scan a sample label before sending inventory and make sure other scannable barcodes are handled according to Amazon’s current prep rules.
