A QR Code has no single universal millimetre size that works for every payload and scanning distance. Reliable printing starts with modules, the four-module clear margin, final physical size, contrast and the reader that must scan it.

Standard QR Code requires a clear Quiet Zone four modules wide on all four sides. The final physical size should keep each module large and sharp enough for the target camera or scanner at the expected distance. Longer payloads and higher error-correction levels can create denser symbols, so size the finished QR after the actual content and correction level are known, then test the real print.
Keep a four-module Quiet Zone around every side
DENSO WAVE states that standard QR Code requires a margin four modules wide on all sides. Nothing should intrude into that clear area: no border, text, logo, crop mark or nearby graphic.
Because the margin is defined in modules rather than one fixed millimetre value, its physical width grows or shrinks with the modules in the printed symbol.
Module size matters more than a universal QR width
QR versions range from 21 × 21 modules to 177 × 177 modules. More data or more error-correction redundancy can require more modules. If you force a dense QR into the same small physical box, each module becomes smaller.
DENSO WAVE recommends considering both printer dot density and scanner resolution when selecting module size. A code that one close-up phone can read is not proof that the production scanner can read it at the intended distance.
Use clean edges and strong light-dark contrast
The safest print starts with dark modules on a light, uniform background. Avoid blur, low-resolution screenshots, excessive compression, glare and decorative elements that change finder patterns or module edges.
SVG is useful when a design team needs to resize the code before output. PNG can also work well when generated and used at an adequate fixed resolution. In both cases, judge the final print rather than the source file alone.
Test at final size, material and scanning distance
- Print the exact payload and selected error-correction level.
- Use the real printer, material, finish and intended physical size.
- Preserve the complete four-module Quiet Zone.
- Test with representative phones or scanners at realistic distances and angles.
