Use EAN-8 without shortening a GTIN-13

A compact retail pack still needs an unambiguous product identity. EAN-8 encodes a separately assigned eight-digit GTIN; it is not an instruction to remove five digits from an EAN-13 number.

Choose it for the packaging constraint

Small consumer packs can have too little suitable surface for a larger retail symbol. EAN-8 may be relevant when the responsible GS1 organisation and trading partners support that allocation. Start with that decision before designing the label. A small jar is not permission to invent eight digits. Keep the identifier tied to its product record, and check whether the physical pack, rather than an enlarged screen preview, really benefits from the shorter symbol.

Enter, examine, then export

Paste the assigned eight digits into Value on this dedicated page. Press Create barcode and inspect Preview, especially the first character and the final check digit. Download PNG or Download SVG after the value is accepted. Keep the original text record alongside the artwork so a designer can compare them later. If the entry is seven digits long, stop and obtain the missing digit; neither arbitrary padding nor deleting a digit from another code is a valid repair.

Budget for the whole mark

At the nominal 0.330 mm module, the GS1 EAN-8 drawing measures 26.73 × 21.31 mm with the surrounding spaces and human-readable digits. Its bars occupy a smaller height than the total image. That footprint is a reference for layout, not an export-size guarantee. Let the quiet zones remain blank and place the symbol away from a fold or the sharply curved edge of a small cap. Shrinking a bitmap until it fits can erase the advantage.

A small label needs a larger proofing effort

Tiny stock magnifies registration errors, excessive ink spread and low-resolution resampling. Print several samples rather than approving the cleanest one. On a thermal device, verify the dot pattern at the actual 203 or 300 dpi setting. A faint print may look attractive but be unreliable; increasing darkness too far can also merge the narrow spaces. Read the finished sample at normal checkout distances and confirm that the decoded digits match the product.

Common questions

Is EAN-8 a compressed EAN-13?
No. GTIN-8 is a distinct identifier. Do not take the last eight digits of a longer product number and treat that result as its replacement.
Can I type letters?
EAN-8 accepts digits only. For an internal alphanumeric stock reference, consider Code 128 instead, after checking what your receiving system expects.
Is eight digits the total including the check digit?
Yes. Supply all eight digits. A check-digit mismatch should send you back to the authorised source record rather than to a guessed correction.
Why is there still white space beside a smaller code?
The shorter data field does not remove the need for quiet zones. Nearby decorative printing can interfere with locating the start and end of the symbol.

EAN-8: Input and usage checks

EAN-8 input requirement

EAN-8 requires exactly 8 numeric digits in BarcoBatch. Shorter or longer values are rejected instead of being padded or truncated.

Use the identifier your workflow requires

Creating the image does not assign or register an EAN identifier. BarcoBatch does not verify product ownership or retailer eligibility. It only renders the barcode from the input value.

Download PNG or SVG

Use PNG for a ready-to-use raster image or SVG for a scalable vector. Test the final label size, contrast and print quality with the scanners used in your real workflow.

A practical input check

A small package does not make the last eight digits of an EAN-13 into an EAN-8. Use the complete assigned GTIN-8. If your source is a 13-digit number, keep it and choose EAN-13; solve the space problem in the label layout instead of cutting the identifier.
