Barcodes for Shipping Cases and Cartons: ITF-14 vs GS1-128 vs Code 128

A shipping case can need very different barcode data depending on whether the goal is to identify the trade-item case, carry logistics attributes or simply scan an internal carton ID. ITF-14, GS1-128 and generic Code 128 are therefore not interchangeable choices.

When ITF-14 fits an outer case

GS1 describes ITF-14 as a barcode intended for outer case packaging such as corrugated fibreboard. Its bar pattern is suited to printing conditions that may be less precise than consumer packaging.

ITF-14 encodes a GTIN and is not intended for retail point-of-sale scanning. If the same package must pass retail checkout, follow the applicable retail carrier requirement instead.

When GS1-128 is the better logistics label

GS1-128 is useful when the label needs more than the trade-item identity. GS1 Application Identifiers can structure information such as batch, dates, quantities and logistics identifiers in a way receiving systems can interpret.

GS1 also states that GS1-128 is the symbology used for GS1 Logistic Labels and the only symbology that encodes the SSCC.

Where generic Code 128 still makes sense

A private warehouse may label cartons with its own shipment, tote or carton IDs. Generic Code 128 can be a practical carrier when the identifier only needs to work inside that controlled system.

The moment an external specification says ITF-14, GS1-128, SSCC or a GS1 Application Identifier, treat that as a standards requirement rather than a visual barcode preference.
