EAN / UPC comparison

EAN-13 vs UPC-A: What’s the Difference and Which One Should You Use?

EAN-13 and UPC-A are both members of the GS1 EAN/UPC family used for retail trade items. They serve a similar purpose, but they carry different GTIN lengths and have different historical market conventions.

Quick answer

EAN-13 carries a 13-digit GTIN-13 and is most common in Europe and much of the rest of the world. UPC-A carries a 12-digit GTIN-12 and is most common in North America. GS1 says EAN and UPC symbols are accepted globally, but individual retailers or trading partners may require one form. If your product already has an assigned GTIN, use the matching identifier and the symbol required by the receiving system.

EAN-13 vs UPC-A at a glance

The easiest way to compare them is to separate the identifier from the printed symbol. A GTIN identifies the trade item; EAN-13 and UPC-A are barcode symbols that can carry specific GTIN lengths at retail point-of-sale.

GTIN is the identifier; EAN-13 or UPC-A is the data carrier

A common source of confusion is using GTIN, EAN and UPC as if they all mean exactly the same thing. GS1 defines GTIN as the identifier used to distinguish trade items. The black-and-white barcode is the data carrier that lets a scanner capture that identifier.

For the two formats compared here, UPC-A carries a GTIN-12 and EAN-13 carries a GTIN-13. BarcodeBatch generates the visual data carrier from the value you enter. It does not allocate the identifier, register a company prefix or prove ownership of a GTIN.

Is UPC-A only for the United States and EAN-13 only for Europe?

No. Geography describes common usage, not an absolute scanning border. GS1 states that GTIN-12 / UPC is mostly used in North America and GTIN-13 / EAN is mostly used in Europe and the rest of the world. GS1 also states that EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8 and UPC-E symbols are accepted worldwide.

The practical exception is the commercial relationship: a retailer can still specify which symbol it accepts in its own buying guide. That is why the retailer or trading partner should win over a generic “US versus Europe” rule when you are preparing a real product listing.

Important: Do not change an assigned retail identifier merely to make the label look more local. Confirm the identifier and symbol requirement with GS1 and the trading partner using the barcode.

Which one should you use?

If you already have an assigned GTIN, start there. Use the barcode symbol that correctly carries that identifier and satisfies the retailer, marketplace or point-of-sale specification.

  • Have a GTIN-13 and need an EAN/UPC retail symbol? EAN-13 is the natural match.
  • Have a GTIN-12 and the trading partner expects UPC-A? Use UPC-A.
  • No GTIN has been assigned yet? Do not use a generator as a substitute for identifier assignment.
  • The code is only for your own SKU or serial-number system? Consider Code 128 instead of a retail EAN/UPC symbol.

Generate UPC-A when your workflow requires the 12-digit symbol

If the receiving system expects UPC-A, use the 12-digit UPC-A value assigned to the trade item. BarcodeBatch requires the correct structural length and does not silently pad, trim or replace the value.

Need many EAN-13 barcodes from a spreadsheet?

For a catalog or label batch, you do not need to generate each EAN-13 one by one. BarcodeBatch Excel Bulk reads an .xlsx workbook locally, lets you choose EAN-13, and can return both an XLSX with embedded barcode images and a ZIP of individual PNGs.

The bulk tool follows the same data-integrity rule as the single generator: source values are not repaired or rewritten to make invalid rows pass.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is EAN-13 better than UPC-A?

Neither is universally better. They carry different GTIN lengths and have different market conventions. Use the assigned identifier and the barcode format required by the retailer or trading partner.

Can UPC-A be scanned outside the United States?

GS1 states that EAN and UPC symbols are accepted globally, but a local retailer can still set its own acceptance requirements. Confirm the commercial specification for the place where the product will be listed or scanned.

Can I convert a UPC into EAN just by adding a zero?

GTINs can be zero-padded in some database representations, but that is not a reason to rewrite a product identifier or relabel a product on your own. Use the assigned GTIN and the symbol required by the relevant GS1 or trading-partner rules.

Does a barcode generator give me an official UPC or EAN number?

No. A generator renders the value you provide. Official product identification and GTIN assignment are separate from drawing the barcode symbol.
