Identify the required retail record
Ask the retailer or marketplace which identifier belongs to the exact item you are supplying. UPC-A artwork does not create a listing, populate a checkout catalogue or establish ownership of the GTIN. Product variants and bundles need the correct allocation process. If a supplier gives you both twelve- and thirteen-digit representations, resolve that relationship in the source system instead of modifying characters in the generator to imitate the number pictured on another package.
A short, deliberate creation sequence
Copy the complete twelve-digit string into Value. Select Create barcode, then compare Preview against the product master record, checking any leading zero individually. Finally choose Download PNG or Download SVG and give the resulting file a name that identifies the relevant item or variant. Do not use a numeric spreadsheet display as the only source: a cell may show eleven digits after dropping its initial zero even though the intended UPC contains twelve.
Leave room for the outside digits
The nominal GS1 UPC-A drawing has the same 37.29 × 25.93 mm overall footprint as nominal EAN-13 at a 0.330 mm module. This includes the clear sides and the digits, not just the central bars. Preserve proportions in the document where you place the file. A designer’s tight crop can remove the outside printed digits or reduce the blank space a scanner needs, even when the central pattern still looks unchanged.
Check the destination, not only the picture
A scanner may present a leading-zero representation according to its configuration. Compare the result expected by the receiving application rather than declaring a mismatch solely from the displayed length. Print at actual size without fit-to-page, avoid coloured or textured backgrounds, and test several real labels. For a 203 dpi thermal printer, inspect narrow elements before increasing throughput; moving to 300 dpi does not repair incorrect source data or an inappropriate label size.
- Can a UPC-A begin with 0?
- Yes. It is part of the supplied identifier and must be retained. Store source UPC values as text when a spreadsheet might otherwise discard it.
- Will an exported UPC-A work automatically at every store?
- The image alone is insufficient. Trading partners need the corresponding product information in their own systems and may impose additional print or packaging requirements.
- Can this tool turn my SKU into a UPC?
- No. An internal SKU is not automatically a retail GTIN. Keep that distinction when choosing between UPC-A and a more flexible internal barcode format.
- Should I add a thirteenth digit?
- This UPC-A field expects twelve digits. Clarify the target system’s GTIN representation outside the generator; do not pad a value simply to satisfy another field length.
